No one died of dengue in Sitakunda last week after a seven-day special programme there, and hospital admissions are falling, Chattogram deputy commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia said. He spoke on Saturday at a street meeting in Karnaphuli upazila after mosquito control, a clean-up drive and an awareness rally.
Dengue surged in Chattogram in September, he said, and 21 people in the district had died of it by the end of the month. Sitakunda and Karnaphuli had the highest infection among the upazilas. By his figures, city hospitals admitted 92 and 47 dengue patients on the past two days.
After the rally the deputy commissioner launched a week of mosquito control near the Char Patharghata union office, spraying larvicide with fogging machines, and inspected work at ten dengue hotspots in the upazila. As part of a three-month programme, about 2,000 mosques and their grounds in the district were cleaned on 12 September.
Treatment alone will not beat dengue, he said; its spread has to be stopped. Water must not be allowed to collect around homes, shops and businesses, and rubbish must go where it belongs. He urged people to stay alert rather than panic.
Chittagong Medical College Hospital, the General Hospital and upazila hospitals have set aside beds for dengue patients and been supplied with test kits, he said.
