Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized hilsa being smuggled into India through the Sunamganj border.

The fish were seized on the afternoon of Saturday, 31 August, in the Shahidabad area of Lauerghar in Tahirpur upazila. BGB said the seized fish weighed 46 kg 500 g.

According to Sunamganj-28 BGB, a group of smugglers was taking the hilsa towards India through the border at Shahidabad in Lauerghar that afternoon. On receiving the information, members of the Lauerghar BGB post under Sunamganj-28 BGB followed the smugglers. At one point the smugglers saw the BGB members, left behind two cork-sheet boxes full of hilsa and fled.

Lieutenant Colonel SM Mahmud Hasan, commander of Sunamganj-28 BGB, confirmed that 46 kg 500 g of hilsa had been seized while being smuggled illegally into India through the Shahidabad border area of Tahirpur.

No one could be arrested, however, and surveillance along the border has been stepped up.
