Bangladesh's parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Religious Affairs has recommended rooftop solar power projects to cut electricity use in the country's mosques, and a clear policy for people who perform Hajj at government expense.
The recommendations came on Tuesday, 6 October, at the first meeting of the committee of the thirteenth parliament, chaired by Rafiqul Islam Jamal at the parliament building. The meeting opened with a recitation from the Holy Quran.
Members discussed the work of the ministry and its agencies, Hajj management, the Islamic Foundation, the Bangladesh Waqf Administration and the religious welfare trusts. Officials presented progress on the ministry's 180-day work plan, its staffing, budget and future plans.
After the discussion the committee called for a policy on electricity use in mosques and for rooftop solar projects on them. It also recommended clear rules for those who go on Hajj at public expense.
To keep health services running well for ordinary people, the committee further recommended prompt transfers of doctors and staff who have long served at the same hospitals and missions run by the Islamic Foundation.
Committee members Azharul Islam Mannan, Md. Zahidur Rahman, Nurul Amin, Subarna Sikder, Md. Nurul Amin, Mohammad Abul Hasan and Muhammad Abdul Khalek attended, with the heads of the ministry's agencies. The report is by a Banglanews24 senior correspondent.
