Severe waterlogging has built up in Chandshi village in Ghatail, Tangail, where there is no planned drainage. Roads and yards are under water and hundreds of families are marooned. With farmland submerged for months, farmers have been unable to cultivate on time and face losses running into lakhs of taka.
Although the monsoon is over, stagnant, foul-smelling water and rubbish remain in several wards of the municipality. In places people rely on a ferry boat, elsewhere on bamboo bridges, and they wade through dirty water every day.
Arif Hossain of Chandshi said permanent waterlogging has brought more mosquitoes, with dengue and skin diseases appearing. He called for drains to be built quickly.
Residents say they pay regular and increased municipal taxes but get no drainage or other civic services. Ghatail municipality began with nine wards in 1998, but in nearly three decades this ward has not seen the development people hoped for, and villagers and traders have long held human chains demanding a permanent solution.
Upazila nirbahi officer and Ghatail municipality administrator Nuri Tasmin Urmi said she had visited Chandshi to check on the marooned families, and that drainage would be arranged as quickly as possible. The report is by ABM Atikur Rahman of Manab Zamin.
