A father and son have spent eight years and 42 prototypes in their Lancashire farm workshop designing a security device for quad bikes and side-by-sides, now patented and on sale as the Keyless ATV Lock, Farmers Weekly reports.
The lock is a bolt-down, drive-in, drive-out unit made from 5mm mild steel plate that takes up little space, said Will Fryars, who built it with his father. It is bolted into the corner of a building against a right-hand wall so it cannot be tampered with. Driving the vehicle in pushes the front-right wheel into a rolling steel shroud that encloses it and locks itself; no keys are involved, and the vehicle is released by pressing a button on a key fob.
The release needs power, so an electricity socket must be close by. There is a way of releasing the lock if the power fails, which the makers do not disclose for security reasons.
The design is finalised for the 24in and 25in tyres common on quad bikes, and Fryars is measuring up versions for other ATV and UTV tyre sizes. The first sales outlets are the machinery dealer Clarke & Pullman in west Lancashire and Dalton's ATVs in south Wales. The lock costs £1,295 plus VAT.
The report is by Peter Hill for Farmers Weekly.
