Bangladesh is expanding its fleet of mobile laboratories that test food for adulteration. Under a project to build the capacity of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, work is under way to buy 72 more mobile laboratory vans in the 2026-27 fiscal year. Mobile labs now test and monitor food samples in eight metropolitan areas, and the plan is to extend the work step by step to all 64 districts.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inspected one of the mobile laboratories, parked at the Secretariat, before entering his office on the morning of Wednesday 14 October. He went inside and watched the whole process of collecting and testing food samples, and officials briefed him on the programme.
Officials said food sampling and monitoring had been stepped up as part of the drive against adulteration. Mobile courts led by executive magistrates and the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority run the work separately.
The labs are also used to raise awareness: monitors mounted on the outside of the vans show the public videos about safe food.
Food minister Afroza Khanam, state minister for food Abdul Bari, chief whip Nurul Islam Moni, the prime minister's principal secretary A B M Abdus Sattar, public administration secretary Kamruzzaman Chowdhury and senior food ministry officials were present. Once the labs reach the districts, food sold in local markets can be tested close at hand, a protection for consumers and honest producers alike. The report is by a Banglanews24 senior correspondent.
